Declining or removing yourself as a trusted contact

How to decline an invitation to be a trusted contact or how to remove yourself as a trusted contact in ChatGPT.

Updated: 16 days ago

Overview

Being a trusted contact is optional, and you will not be listed as a trusted contact until you have accepted an invitation to become one. You can decline an invitation during the 1-week enrollment period. If you accepted the invitation but are no longer able to be a trusted contact, you can remove yourself.

If you want to learn more about the role before you decide, see: Being someone's trusted contact.

Understand what happens if you decline or remove yourself

If you do not accept a trusted contact invitation during the 1-week enrollment period, you will not be added as that person's trusted contact and you will not be eligible to receive trusted contact notifications.

If you decline the invitation or if the enrollment period ends without a response, the ChatGPT user who sent the invitation will be prompted to choose a different trusted contact.

After you decline to be a trusted contact, the same user cannot add you again as their trusted contact.

You can decline from the invitation you received in the ChatGPT app, by email, or by text or WhatsApp message.

Remove yourself after accepting

If you have accepted a trusted contact invitation and would like to be removed, please contact OpenAI Support. Be sure to include the phone number or email address where you received the trusted contact invitation in your message.

If you contact Support to remove yourself after accepting a trusted contact invitation, it may take up to 1 week for the removal to take effect.

Talk with the person who added you

If you feel comfortable, you may want to let the person know that you have declined the invitation or have removed yourself.

If you need help understanding the role or talking with the person after a notification, see: Being someone's trusted contact.

If immediate safety is a concern

Trusted contact notifications are intended to encourage real-world support. They do not replace professional help.

If you believe the person may be in immediate danger, or if you do not feel safe, contact local emergency services or a helpline right away.

FAQ

Will the person know if I decline the invitation to become a trusted contact or remove myself?

They will be notified that the person they invited is unable to be their trusted contact at this time, and this may happen for different reasons (such as the person they added may not be able to participate, or they may not have responded to the invitation within the 1 week enrollment period). They will also be encouraged to add a different trusted contact.

Can the same user add me again later?

No. The same user cannot add you again as a trusted contact after you have actively declined their invitation.
