Life Science Research Special Access Program

We are building a trusted access program to enable certain vetted and trusted customers to access a less restricted version of our services in order to engage in beneficial applications across the life sciences, consistent with our recent post on biosafety work and the Agent System Card.

We are taking a conservative approach that prioritizes safety in dual-use cases, and we acknowledge that our standard safeguards can create high friction for some researchers who are pursuing beneficial applications.

Our special access program is for select institutions that have service agreements with OpenAI. We consider a range of governance and safety indicators before granting access, including biosafety and security controls, as well as the nature of the intended use case. When we grant access to this limited program, our models are permitted to provide more detailed responses in dual-use areas, while still blocking generations associated with weaponization or other acute risks. Our Usage Policies also remain in effect in all cases, and we will continue to monitor closely for potential abuse.

We believe trusted access balances robust safeguards with our commitment to enabling responsible advancement in life sciences.
