OpenAI takes account security seriously. Occasionally, our system will display ‘Suspicious Activity Alerts’ if it detects unusual or potentially risky behavior. Below is an overview of where and how these alerts may appear, as well as tips on securing your account.
These alerts may also impact your access to certain features. Learn more about troubleshooting model feature access issues here.
Why You’re Seeing These Alerts
Unusual Sign-In Behavior: Logins from unexpected locations or devices.
Inconsistent Usage Patterns: Sudden spikes in activity or settings changes.
Multiple Concurrent Sessions: More simultaneous logins than usual.
Note: These alerts are often cautionary and do not necessarily indicate wrongdoing. They are designed to help protect your account.
What to Do if You Receive an Alert
Create a new password that is strong and unique to ChatGPT.
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)
Add an extra step to your login process to enhance security.
Troubleshooting if restrictions persist
If the banner or feature restrictions continue after taking the steps above, try these self-serve actions:
Sign out of all devices, then sign back in.
Clear your browser cookies and cache.
Try signing in from an incognito/private window, a different browser, or another device.
Disable any VPN, proxy, Private Relay, browser extensions, or automation tools.
Use one trusted device and network while you troubleshoot.
If the issue persists, contact Support and include:
The email address on the account
A screenshot of the banner or any error messages
Timestamps, with timezone, of when you first saw the alert
Device, browser, and operating system details
Whether you were using a VPN, proxy, or Private Relay
Any request, ray, or device IDs shown in the banner or logs, if available
Note: Sharing your account with others may trigger these alerts. For more details, see our Account Sharing Policy.
Tips for Maintaining a Secure Account
